Dental Veneers

Meaning, Types and Advantages of Dental Veneers

Dental Veneers are the less painful alternative way to make your teeth better in appearance. Dental Veneers are basically shells that are fitted over your teeth’s front surfaces to enhance your look and provide a stunning smile. They are referred to as smile makeovers at times. Veneers are regarded by specialists as the ultimate cosmetic dentistry technique since they have the ability to alter a tooth’s length, size, appearance, and function. Getting them is not medically required; rather, they are voluntary. About 26% of the cosmetic treatments that dentists do involve veneers. Dental veneers may be preferred over alternative treatments for a few reasons.

Type of Dental Veneer

There are various kind of Veneers available in the market and offered by dental experts. Here are some of the widely known type of Dental Veneers

Porcelain veneers

The most popular material for veneers is porcelain. The tint of porcelain veneers matches that of teeth. They are very customizable, adaptable, and have a ten-to-fifteen year lifespan. Compared to composite veneers, they are more stain resistant due to their ceramic construction.
Porcelain veneers also have the advantage of being less intrusive and more conservative than crowns, which is another benefit. Additionally, because they are biocompatible, they have no adverse effects on the gums or other soft tissues in the mouth.

Composite Veneer

Porcelain veneers can be substituted with composite veneers. Composite resin, a blend of inorganic and organic components, is used to make them. These veneers are made of a bonding substance similar to that used in tooth-colored dental fillings. Composite veneers are robust but not as long-lasting as porcelain veneers. With time, they may also become more easily stained.

Onlays

Onlays are commonly used by dentists to treat posterior, or rear, teeth. For the restoration of anterior (front) teeth, dentists employ palatal veneers, a unique type of onlay. Dental erosion, bruxism, and deep bite are the three main causes of palatal damage to anterior teeth. Erosion might result from severe acid reflux and recurrent vomiting. When it comes to recovering a tooth, palatal onlays are an excellent way to keep the remainder of the tooth intact.

Lumineers

Lumineers are a transparent, ultra-thin (0.2 mm) veneer brand. They even more closely resemble the color and form of real tooth enamel than conventional porcelain veneers. Because Lumineers are so thin, no tooth reduction or recontouring is necessary. They can also be reversed. They may not last as long as regular veneers since they are more likely to chip. But with proper maintenance, laminate veneers have the potential to last just as long as conventional porcelain veneers.

Removable veneers

Compared to regular veneers, removable veneers are less intrusive, non-permanent, and less expensive. Due to the necessity for dentists to remove a portion of the tooth’s enamel, permanent veneers are irreversible. Tooth reduction is not necessary for veneers that are removable. Even though they are more handy, detachable veneers don’t seem as natural as permanent veneers. They may eventually damage your gum tissue and are also more likely to accumulate plaque.

Advantages of Veneer

Veneers are applied to people for the following reasons:

  1. Can alter the teeth’s size, shape, color, and length
  2. To restore teeth that have chipped, cracked, or fractured (due to trauma, nail-biting, etc.)
  3. To remove white streaks or patches on teeth (usually brought on by overusing fluoride)
  4. To conceal discolorations and stains on teeth (caused by dark-colored meals, certain medications, aging naturally, etc.)
  5. To prevent tooth fractures during root canal therapy, the majority of dentists advise crowns or 3/4 crowns. Veneers are seldom placed on anterior teeth that have had root canal therapy.
Additionally, veneers are seldom or never placed on molars by dentists.
